Dashain
The year gold changes hands
The day itself
About Dashain
Fifteen days, and the time of year when gold is given: to a daughter, to a new wife, to a granddaughter old enough for her first jhumka. Tika day is the centre of it. In Australia the gatherings fall on the nearest weekend, so plan for the Saturday rather than the exact date.
What is actually worn
- Gold: Dashain is when jewellery is given, and when it is worn
- Naugedi or tilhari for tika day, over whatever you are wearing
- A first pair of jhumka for a granddaughter, the standard Dashain gift
- Something new for every woman in the house, however small

The colour rules
These are stricter than they look from the outside. Getting them right is most of dressing correctly for the day.
- Deep redTika, and the colour of the whole festival.
- Temple goldIn zari, in jewellery, in the topi.
- IvoryFor the daura, offset against red.
Leaving it late?
In Sydney you can order the morning of the gathering and wear it that night, two hours to your door, before 7pm. Everywhere else in Australia, order the day before.
