What to Wear to a Nepali Wedding in Australia

A practical guide to choosing an outfit for the ceremony and reception, from kurta sets and saris to colours, shoes and fit.

A kurta suruwal, sari, lehenga or formal outfit can all work for a Nepali wedding in Australia. Check the invitation first, and ask your hosts if you are unsure about the dress code. Customs vary between families and communities.

What to wear to the ceremony

For a daytime ceremony, a kurta suruwal is an easy choice. A matching set with embroidery suits many ceremonies. Add earrings, comfortable shoes and a dupatta you can keep in place while greeting family or sitting down.

A sari is another option. Choose a drape you can manage for several hours and bring a few safety pins. You may be asked to remove your shoes at a home or temple, so footwear that slips on and off is useful.

If you have not been to a Nepali wedding before, you do not need to buy traditional clothing simply to attend. A neat formal outfit is fine unless the invitation asks for something specific. When in doubt, ask the couple or someone close to the family.

What to wear to the reception

Receptions often allow for a dressier look. A kurta with detailed embroidery, a sari or a formal dress can work well. Take the venue and invitation into account: an afternoon garden event and an evening reception in a function room may call for different shoes and fabrics.

If you are attending both events, you can wear the same kurta set twice. Change your earrings, shoes or the way you drape the dupatta for the evening. It is a practical option when the events are on the same day or you are travelling between venues.

Can guests wear red, white or black?

Red is often associated with Nepali bridal dress, but guests also wear red at many celebrations. Families have different preferences, so ask your host if you are unsure or if the invitation mentions a colour theme.

Some families may prefer guests to avoid white or black at a religious ceremony. Others will not mind. There is no need to guess: a quick message to the couple or a family member is the most reliable guide. Rose, green, blue, maroon and jewel tones are other options if you would rather choose a different colour.

Choosing a comfortable kurta set

Look at the fit through the shoulders and bust first, then check that you can sit comfortably in the trousers. Sizes on Nepali and South Asian garments do not always match Australian labels, so compare your measurements with the size guide rather than choosing by the number alone.

For a warm outdoor ceremony, a lighter fabric and a loose cut can feel more comfortable. For an evening venue, take a shawl or use your dupatta over your shoulders if the room is cool. Check the garment's care instructions before the day, especially if it has delicate embroidery.

Our kurta suruwal collection includes straight and wide-leg sets for celebrations. Check each product page for its fabric and available sizes.
